Bookshelf Decorating

White bookshelf with decor, plants, books, and candles.

It can be hard to bring a room together, but bookshelves are a great way to do so. They can serve as a focal-point for a large, empty wall, a conversation starter, or simply a place to store miscellaneous items that don’t have their own home. Both practical and stylish, we’ve put together a few tips on how to utilize a bookshelf to your full advantage.

  • Invest in a few baskets. You don’t have to literally invest a lot of money to find cute baskets, but we suggest purchasing a few of the same type. Place them on varying levels and use them to maintain a balance. Fill them with all the miscellaneous items that don’t have a home within your home. Depending on the size of baskets you use, it may be good to use these as building blocks to decorate around.
  • Bring on the books! What’s a bookshelf without books? We love to mix horizontal stacks with vertical ones. To keep a balance, try diagonally zig-zagging the horizontal stacks. Horizontal stacks also serve as a nice platform to showcase a beautiful vase, a travel memento, or a plant.
  • Add pops of green with plants. Use an ivy to top the bookshelf with hanging vines or fill corners with succulents.
  • Custom touches like framed photo(s), art, ornate dishes, or candles are great personalizations and conversation starters.
  • Incorporate differing height levels and don’t be afraid to go too tall. Tall pieces draw the eyes up and make the room seem bigger.
  • You can also bring in varying textures like through pillows, boxes, baskets or throws.
